Two Easy Ways to Avoid a Ticket During Denver's Street Sweeper Season

April 30, 11:20 AM
by John Morrissey, Denver Traffic Examiner

Now that the snow season is over (I hope), Denver’s street sweepers are out in formation, clearing the winter crap from the roads around town. Actually, Denver’s sweepers work year round, but this is the busy time.  April to October is the street sweeper Super Bowl when they attack over 5,000 miles of Denver roads. They try and hit each street once a month.

Many of Denver’s streets have cute little red and white signs, warning you that your car is going to get ticketed, and possibly towed, if you leave it on the street on a sweeping day. The city makes it easy. The signs are easy to see and each one lists the day when the sweeper will come through.

So, what happens if you have a brain fart and forget? Well, it works like this. The sweeper comes along and spots your car on the street. So, you get a ticket.  Congratulations!

But, wait. There is more.

Your car could get towed, too. It will not get taken to an impound lot. Instead, they will do what they call a “short tow” and move your car to the next block. If that happens, you have to pay the ticket AND the tow charge.

I called the city's info line (3-1-1) and they told me the ticket would set you back $25.  The tow?  Add on another $100.  You have to pay for both so, the grand total is $125.

That is one expensive brain fart.

But, you do not have to go through this parking purgatory. There are two easy ways you can get a reminder that the sweepers are coming and you have to move the car and, both are absolutely free.

Denver will send you a friendly free reminder in the mail to let you know that the sweepers are coming. You can sign up here.

If snail mail is just too “last century” for you, click here and a free e-minder will show up on your cell phone when the street sweepers are heading for your neighborhood.

There you go; two no fuss ways to avoid the ticket and tow in Denver and you get a squeaky clean street at the same time.
