Snow Continues to Clog Some Great Mountain Drives

May 29, 7:06 AM
by John Morrissey, Denver Traffic Examiner

Our big snow winter is still causing problems for CDOT’s snowplows. Independence Pass, which connects Aspen with Leadville, remains closed while they battle huge overhangs and towering slabs of snowdrifts. Usually, CO 82/Independence Pass is open by Memorial Day. Not this year. The start of summer came and went and Independence Pass remains closed.

Cottonwood Pass, which cuts through the craggy peaks of the Sawatch Range west of Buena Vista, is still snowbound, too. This is one of my favorite high mountain drives. You push west from Buena Vista, up over the 12,126 foot pass, down past Taylor Reservoir and historic Tin Cup and eventually end up in Gunnison or Crested Butte. The views of the fourteeners that surround you are spectacular! CDOT plows are trying to get it clear, but it is going to take another couple weeks before they will get Cottonwood Pass open.

Another great mountain drive is the trip over Kebler Pass. You start in Crested Butte, head west, pass Paonia Reservoir, and end up in Glenwood Springs. It is a great trip, but not right now. Snow drifts have it closed, too.

CDOT does not have a firm opening set for any of these three drives. All they can say right now is…”sometime in June.”

But, if you are dying to experience inspiring views, huge drifts of snow, up close wildlife and a little history, there is no reason to sit at home.

Tomorrow, I will show you three great Denver day trips you can take right now.  Each one guaranteed to get you high into the Rockies.
