White Flag Flies in Brighton
POSTED May 16, 7:10 AM
Well, it looks like a truce has been declared in Brighton’s gas war. A guy called in during the “Kelly, Mudflap and Jo Jo show” on KYGO this morning and said it ended peacefully at about 9 last night.

Latest Average Gas Prices in Colorado

Regular      $3.71
Mid              $3.97
Premium    $4.14
Diesel         $4.39
source: AAA

It was great while it lasted. Gas was selling for as low as $3.00 a gallon as Western Convenience battled with the Kum n Go for customers. The caller said there were more RVs on Bridge Street than you will see on the highways for the Memorial Day weekend.

Now, that is funny.

Speaking of gas prices, they are up….again.

That is definitely NOT funny.

According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular is $3.78, a new record high.  Gas prices have climbed 11% over the past month across the country and up nearly 22% from where they were a year ago.

Two states, Alaska and Connecticut have crashed through the $4.00 barrier.  I can understand Alaska….but, Connecticut?  Boy, talk about a high gas tax.

The cheapest gas is south of us. Arizona’s average is $3.56 for a gallon of regular. The second least expensive gas is north of us, in Wyoming.

Here in Colorful Colorado, we are paying through the nose at the pump. Even with a refinery stinking up the place, gas wells drilling like crazy all over the state, and a major east/west pipeline that basically follows I-70, we can not catch a break.

When do we say enough is enough?

It Is War On Bridge Street In Brighton, (Gas War, That Is)
POSTED May 15, 7:03 AM
A gas war has broken out on Bridge Street in Brighton.

When a competitor opened down the street, the Western convenience store lowered their gas prices. The new comer quickly dropped their gas prices, too.

Brighton's Bridge Street gas war was on.

This morning, gas at the Western was $3.22 for regular. That is close to 50 cents cheaper than the average price for gas here in Colorado, according to AAA.

But, you have to time it just right.

When one of these stations runs out of gas, the other combatant quickly hikes their gas prices back up toward $3.70 and a truce is delared in the Bridge Street gas war in Brighton.

$3.29 For A Gallon Of Gas? Really?
POSTED May 14, 6:08 PM
Tuesday morning, I noticed that some drive by gas spotter said he or she saw regular unleaded for $3.29 a gallon at a Conoco station at Parker and Arapahoe. It was posted at 9:45am the day before on www.denvergasprices.com.

$3.29 a gallon? Man, if that is true, $3.29 for regular is a BIG bargain.

And, it must be true. It is on the internet, right?

Still, my skeptical side made me check a couple other “LOWEST GAS PRICES” websites. Both www.automotive.com  and www.autos.msn.com said it was $3.59 a gallon.  www.gasprices.mapquest.com had its head in the sand. It did not even know the gas station was there.

Well, I took these pictures in the drizzle from the front seat of my car that morning.  As you can see, a gallon of regular at this particular station was not $3.29 or $3.59. The price at this particular Conoco at Parker and Arapahoe cost $3.69 a gallon today, 10 to 40 cents more than the "current" prices posted on three different “LOWEST GAS PRICES” websites.

You know what the worst thing is?

I wasted a gallon of gas driving over there to find out the truth.

This is not an indictment against Conoco. Their prices are just as good (or bad) as most other zippy mart gas places in town.

Nope, this is just a word to the wise.

If you are considering using one of those “LOWEST PRICES” websites to search for cheap gas.

The word to the wise is…

Don’t.

BREAKING NEWS!! I-70 Has Just Reopened
POSTED May 14, 2:55 PM
Wreckers have just cleared the rolled over truck off eastbound I-70 and the highway is open.  This shot is looking east and it shows traffic just beginning to move past the Colorado Blvd. bridge, where the accident occured.  The traffic coming toward you is westbound I-70 that was slow from Quebec.

It took about 2 hours for the accident to be cleared and it put a hammer lock on both eastbound AND westbound I-70.

Expect traffic to be slow on I-70 near Colorado for a while until these backups clear out.

BREAKING NEWS! Rolled Truck Blocks All Lanes of Eastbound I-70 At Colorado
POSTED May 14, 2:00 PM
All lanes of Eastbound I-70 are blocked by a truck that rolled and ended up under the Colorado Blvd. bridge.  As you can see in this picture, courtesy of CDOT, wreckers are on the scene, trying to get that truck out from under the bridge.

Eastbound I-70 traffic is being is being detoured onto Colorado.

Traffic on Colorado is also affected.  As you can see, the ramp from Sorthbound Colorado to Eastbound I-70 is blocked, too.

Westbound I-70 is open.  The accident did not close that side of the highway.  As you can see in this second picture, westbound I-70 is very backed up with stop and go traffic because everyone is trying to see what is going on in the eastbound lanes.

The bad news is there is really no great way around this snafu on I-70.  You could try northbound I-25 to eastbound I-76 to eastbound I-270, but that is going to be backed up because of traffic trying to get on I-70.

This accident happened about 12:45 this afternoon.

There is no word on when Eastbound I-70 will reopen.
