An earthquake near Samoa early this morning is the cause of a Tsunami watch for the islands of Hawaii.

The 8.3 magnitude earthquake is described as 'great' on the Ricther magnitude scale and has been known to cause serious damage.  To put this earthquake into perspective, it is far more powerful than the Hawaii earthquake of 2006, which measured 6.7 on the Ricther scale, destroyed hotels and houses on the Big Island and shut down power on Oahu for several hours.

Concerned parents should continue to listen to the radio, and log into the National Weather Service and the Hawaii Civil Defense websites, which continue to post periodic updates on this natural disaster.

The Hawaii Civil Defense website also provides a helpful zone mapping search tool for Tsunami evacuation zones based on the maps in the yellow pages.

Any waves are generated from the earthquake are estimated to reach Hawaii at approximately 1:11 P.M.
