The charming Village of Greenport, located on Long Island’s North Fork, is renowned for its delightful atmosphere. A unique center of arts and culture, this small historic maritime seaport is a well traveled destination for throngs of visitors during the warmer months. Summertime is not the only season when things heat up in Greenport. This winter, the village heats up those cold winter days, beginning on Thanksgiving Weekend, with a month-long holiday festival full of seasonal fun for the whole family. Here’s a peek at some of what’s in store during Greenport’s Holiday Festival 2009:
Saturday, November 28th
- Holiday tree lighting ceremony at Mitchell Park;
- A “Joyous Musical Program”, with carolers, cookies and cider entertaining pedestrians as they meander their way through the village (5-6PM);
-“A Christmas Carol”, presented by the Floyd Memorial Library, and performed by Theatreworks from 2-4PM at the Greenport School auditorium (free admission);
- Free wine tasting at the Greenport’s Wine and Spirits Shop at 132 Front Street, with complementary hors d’oeuvres, 3-6PM;
- The Floyd Memorial Library presents an art opening of paintings by artist Charles Winheld, 3-5PM. Wine and cheese will be served at this free event.
Sunday, November 29th
- Join in the fun as the Village of Greenport decorates its holiday trees, 10AM -2PM; Christmas carolers provide the merriment once again to strollers and shoppers alike.
Friday, December 4
- The Floyd Memorial Library presents cellist Andrew Smith, accompanied by Mykola Suk on piano, performs a Classical Music Program of Beethoven’s Cello Sonatas, from 7-9PM.
Saturday, December 5
- The Railroad Museum of Long Island hosts its Annual Holiday Open House at 440 4th Street. The festivities begin at 11:30 PM, with Santa arriving from the North Pole at noon via the Long Island Railroad (of course!) and will be doling out gifts & goodies to all the good boys & girls who come to greet him! Refreshments will be served at the event and enter the raffle for a chance to win an Atlas Limited Edition LIRR Toy Train Set. Admission is free and all are welcome. The event concludes at 3PM;
- The decoration of the village’s holiday trees continues at 10AM with prizes being awarded for the best decorated trees at 3PM.
Sunday, December 6
- A free Gallery Art Tour begins at 1:00 PM at the Siren’s Song Art Gallery and Carriage House (516 Main Street) and continues for four hours through the village’s art galleries. Refreshments will be served;
- The Railroad Museum’s Holiday Open House continues from 11:30 AM to 3PM.
Friday, December 11
- Join the folks at Floyd Memorial Library and learn how to make your own Christmas ornament using glass spheres and paint. 3:30 to 4:30 PM. Free.
Saturday, December 12
- Join in as the Village paints its storefront windows in holiday themes, from 10 AM to 2 PM, with awards for the best announced at 3 PM.
Sunday, December 13
- A presentation of Truman Capote’s adapted “A Christmas Memory” is given at Floyd Memorial Library from 3 to 4PM, with cookies and cider and wine and cheese served afterwards. Free;
- Mr. and Mrs. Claus arrive in Greenport;
- The Village’s Holiday Parade begins at Greenport High School at 2PM, making its way down Front Street, with all the festivities that come with a holiday parade.
Saturday, December 19
- A free tour of four Historic Houses, all decked out in holiday décor will be given every fifteen minutes from 1-3PM. Shuttle buses for the tour depart on 1st Street, between Adams and south Streets;
- The 1st Children’s Winter Games in Mitchell Park begin at 1PM with awesome competitions like broom hockey and the golf challenge. For children, ages K – 6. 1 PM. – 3 PM. Prizes will be awarded.
Sunday, December 20;
- “Explore the beautiful Historic Village of Greenport by taking a walking tour of architecturally and historically significant buildings. ‘Walking Tour’ guides will be available at Siren’s Song Art Gallery & Carriage House at 516 Main Street. Refreshments will be served. 12 PM – 4 PM Free.”
Thursday, December 31
- The "Dropping of the Anchor", a unique, “sparkling” event takes place at midnight on New Year’s Eve.
