Riders can ride Metro for free today while Metro technicians repair current electronic glitches.
Metro spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein says an outage to an internal distribution unit has taken the Metro data center computer out of commission since 2:45 a.m. this morning. This outage has not only impacted rail stations, but office computer systems and bus computer systems as well.
The transit system's Web site and customer call center are not in service and can not be updated and all phones at its headquarters in downtown D.C. also are down. At Metro rail stations, customers will be unable to make purchases with their debit cards, and the public address system is not working.
Metrobus riders are being allowed to ride without paying because fare boxes are down. The control centers for buses and MetroAccess also are unable to communicate with vehicles on the street.
