Denver Botanic Gardens waterfall in late summer
Denver Botanic Gardens - York Street

Denver Botanic Gardens membership inspires environmentally-conscious living

As summer draws to a close with many Jeffco parents spending the evening at Back-to-School night, picking kids up from soccer practice, and packing lunch boxes, hundreds of Denver families shirked their mid-week responsibilities to attended the fourth of six members-only nights at the Denver Botanic Gardens.  Wednesday's cool evening temperature encouraged families to linger at their picnic spot, and barefoot children chased energetic dads in the grass surrounding the amphitheater.

Each visit to the Botanic Gardens offers patrons a unique experience, as different flowers, trees and plants come into bloom throughout the year.  Late August is an ideal viewing time for roses and sunflowers. In addition to the beautiful blooms, the Jurassic Gardens exhibit on display at the York Street location features life-size dinosaurs (including the petite bambiraptor) and prehistoric plants from the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods.  Volunteers are on-hand to facilitate kid-friendly activities, including the application of temporary dinosaur tattoos, craft making, and fossil digging.

No other Denver attraction educates and inspires the public toward sustainable living as subtly and effectively as a visit to the Gardens.   The vegetable and herb gardens are as colorful and striking as the summer foliage, and lush grape vines shade walkways and arches.  Waste receptacles are plentiful and strategically placed, and are always accompanied by both a compost receptacle and recycling bin.  Two large compost bins are informative and fully functional.  The newly completed entrance and gift store showcase eco-friendly items such as reusable lunch supplies by To-Go-Ware, biodegradable flower pots by Rosso's International, and a wide selection of books on green living.

An annual membership to the Botanic Gardens is reasonably priced, starting at $45 .  In addition to unlimited access to the York Street Gardens, Denver Botanic Gardens at Chatfield, and Mount Goliath Trail, there are six after-hours events, special preview nights for the Corn Maze, Blossoms of Light, and Trail of Lights, discounted admission to the Pumpkin Festival, members-only shopping times for the highly anticipated spring and fall plant sales, discounts on educational classes, and advanced tickets to the Summer Concert Series.

Treat the family to a visit to the Denver Botanic Gardens.  With several of the most popular Botanic Garden events just around the corner, fall is the perfect time to purchase or renew your membership.  You'll be supporting a worthwhile cause, and leave inspired to spruce up your garden and incorporate simple, eco-responsible choices into your urban lifestyle.
