This seems to be the hardest time of year for people to stick with their exercise routine: we itch to get outside, we get the teaser days of warm weather, followed by streaks of cold, winter weather.  So if you are bored silly with your indoor cardio routine, below is an interval treadmill workout that can be done by runners AND walkers:

  • Warm up 5 minutes with a brisk walk
  • 5 minutes at moderate effort (easy jog or fast walk), 0% incline (grade)
  • Holding the same moderate pace:
    • 5 min. at 3% grade
    • 5 min. at 5% grade
    • 5 min. at 3% grade
    • 5 min. at 0% grade
  • Cool down 5 minutes with a brisk walk
  • Stretch well after workout

* Be sure to stay hydrated, and as always, listen to your body!

NOTE: If need be, you can slow the pace down a little on the higher % grades.  Discontinue exercise if you experience any pain.  It is recommended that you consult your physician before beginning any new form of exercise.
