Relief is here! The 90+ degree streak should end today!

August 5, 9:16 AM

The heat wave ends today!
The heat wave ends today!
July 12th.  That was the last time Denver did not have a daytime high temperature at 90 degrees or higher.  That was 23 days ago and represents a record breaking heat wave that eclipsed the old record of 18 days last set 107 years ago in 1901.

Three of those 23 days broke 100 degrees and 14 of them were between 95 and 99 degrees.  The streak also puts our tally of 90 degree or higher days in 2008 at 40 days.  That seems like a lot but it is still 10 days short of reaching the "top 10" for number of 90 degree days in a year - 50 days were seen in 1960 and 1964.

Today it appears the streak will come to a merciful end.  Tuesday we should see temperatures actually below normal and reach a rather comfortable 83 degrees.  Scattered thunderstorms this afternoon could also bring some desperately needed moisture to the area.  Due to the erratic nature of the front, some of these could be severe, producing very localized and heavy rain although the greatest threat will be east of Greeley and Limon where there is more moisture in the atmosphere right now. For the longer term, temperatures will remain seasonal with the usual threat of thunderstorms in the afternoon being present for the balance of the week.

So now that the heat wave is ending, what shall we talk about?  If you have any ideas, leave a comment and let me know!
