Scary movies are all the rage this time of year, and if you’re recently married, you’ll probably want to curl up and share a few cinematic scream-fests with the new spouse. If your marriage is like mine, however, you might find yourselves woefully mismatched when it comes to choosing movies; perhaps you love an evening of blood, gore and zombies, but your husband or wife just doesn’t get the appeal.
If you’re craving your annual Halloween fright-fix but don’t want to watch alone, here are some not-so-traditional scary movies that your horror-shy spouse might actually watch:
"Shaun Of The Dead" – In this British horror-comedy, 29-year-old Shaun attempts to turn his dead-end life around and win back his ex-girlfriend. As timing would have it, zombies begin to rise around modern-day London, and Shaun must prove his usefulness once and for all by rescuing his girlfriend and mother from the flesh-hungry undead. More funny than scary, one does not have to be a fan of horror movies to appreciate the satire here.
"Sleepy Hollow" – In this visually-stunning adaptation of the Washington Irving classic, New York Constable Ichabod Crane arrives in the small village of Sleepy Hollow to solve a gruesome murder mystery. The discovery of victims with their heads missing leads the townspeople to suspect the ghostly "headless horseman" who, according to legend, roams the woods at night, seeking revenge for his murder many years before. Crane scoffs at such notions, only to find his skepticism shaken when he comes face to face with the headless horseman himself. The special effects here are captivating, the gore level is low, and Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci give charming performances as Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel, respectively.
"Fido" - Growing up isn’t easy, especially not when your best friend is a six-foot tall, rotting zombie. Little Timmy Robinson adores Fido, his undead playmate--but when Fido eats the next-door neighbor, Timmy must convince his mom and dad to give the zombie a second chance. Think of it as a boy-and-his-dog movie with a Halloween twist, sort of a "Lassie" for "Night of the Living Dead" fans.
"The Frighteners" – When architect Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox in his last lead live-action role), loses his wife in a devastating car accident, he finds himself developing psychic powers. Bannister starts a lucrative business “exorcising” ghosts from various homes—never mind that the ghosts are friends of his, and that he convinced them to haunt the homes in the first place. All goes smoothly until Bannister discovers that an entity resembling the Grim Reaper is killing people, marking them for slaughter by placing numbers on their forehead. Suddenly, it is up to Bannister and his ghost friends to keep the deadly spirit from killing anyone else. Violence and gore takes a backseat to comedy hear, and Fox gives a terrific, endearing performance.
