The queen of R&B Mary J Blige has experienced triumphant highs, but also devastating lows in her life. She credits several great people her life for helping through her darkest times, so it isn't a huge surprise that she is opening a Center for Women in her hometown Yonkers, New York. During the press conference, she explained how her life experiences motivated her to open the the center, “When I was growing up after that I saw so many women almost beaten to their death by men... I would walk outside and I would see them being slapped so hard, it looked like their head was gonna come off….and it wasn’t just in poverty that I seen this abuse, it was everywhere.” The center will encourage women by supporting educational programs, career development, self-esteem and personal growth.
