Springtime is the best time to hit the trails, as they say, April showers bring May flowers and the trails are often pretty soggy. Nothing is worse than wet footwear. Lafuma has engineered a new treatment called OutDry that will keep your running shoes drier. OutDry is a waterproof, breathable membrane technology that laminates directly to the inside of the outer most layer of a shoe or boot. Instead of inserting a bootie system (which is what all conventional waterproof systems use), this membrane is bonded to whatever fabric is on the outer of the shoe. It can be bonded directly to leather, mesh, fabric and even eyelets for the laces. This has many advantages such as allowing the foot to breathe more and for the shoe to be more waterproof since the membrane is hydrophobic on the outer side and hydrophilic on the inner to pull moisture away from the foot. There is also less weight to carry when running since water cannot penetrate the outer of the shoe.
The Lafuma Sky Race trail running shoe has a three-dimensional mesh upper, a reinforced toe and lacing that allows a secure fit of both the lower and upper foot separately. It has great padding and is super comfortable, but does have one downside. While wearing the shoe, my heel slipped around quite a bit. Despite all my attempts to tighten the lacing system, I could not get my heel to fit securely in the shoe, and it resulted in some chaffing around my ankle. But, my foot was dry!
