Shame on me for not mentioning the Puget Sound Pro-Am, a homebrew competition held at the end of May. At the event, beers are judged according to AHA/BJCP (American Homebrewing Association/Beer Judging Certification Program) guidelines and local, commercial brewers select their favorites to be brewed and offered at their establishments. The best-of-show winners are also eligible to compete in the Pro-Am competition at this year's Great American Beer Festival in October.
182 beers were judged at the Puget Sound competition. Here are the winners, beer names/styles and locations of release:
1. Brian Thatcher’s "Tar Pit Stout" – Russian Imperial Stout (Ram - Seattle/U District)
2. Joel Pratt’s "Tilted Kilt Scotch Ale" – Strong Scotch Ale (Ram - Puyallup)
3. Kevin Davey’s "Davey Grande Reserve" – Belgian Dark Strong (Ram - Tacoma)
4. James Golovich’s "Munich Helles" – Munich Helles (Diamond Knot)
5. Kenneth Reister’s "After the Supernova" – Russian Imperial Stout (Elysian Brewing )
6. Mike Fox’s "American Stout" – American Stout (Rogue - Issaquah)
7. Jeff N-meyer's "Barking Dog" – Scottish Export 80/- (Big Time Brewery)
8. Mark Emiley’s "May Day Kolsch" – Kolsch (Rock Bottom - Seattle)
9. Colin Lenfesty’s "Saison du Beacon" – Saison (Rock Bottom - Bellevue)
10. Paul Cervenka’s "Pliny the Hop Shortage Denier" – Imperial IPA (Elliott Bay Brewery)
11. James Golovich’s "American Barleywine 2007" – American Barleywine (Elliott Bay Brewery)
12. Dean Priebe’s "Pig Biting Porter" – Robust Porter (Pike Brewing)
13. Mark Emiley’s "Cascade Cougar" – Imperial IPA (Powerhouse Brewery)
The first of these to be offered at a local brewery is Mark Emiley's May Day Kölsch, which took second place in Best-of-Show. The beer will be available tonight at Seattle's Rock Bottom Brewery from 5:30-8:00 pm for $2 a pint. Rock Bottom is making the release a benefit for Inner City Outings, a group that provides opportunities for urban dwelling kids to explore, enjoy and protect nature.
