Seattle Beer Examiner
Chris Devlin moved to Seattle from San Francisco in 2005. After a year of whining about the weather, he discovered the city's beer community. He's been drinking and blogging about it ever since. Some say he's obsessed with beer. He did try 375 beers in 2007 and spends all his vacation time on beer travels. You can find more of his writing at The Beer Retard.

Beer at Lunch: Wednesday at Collins Pub

June 12, 3:24 PM
by Chris Devlin, Seattle Beer Examiner

Wednesday's destination was Collins Pub, the first stop of the week where I had my beer with lunch instead of ducking in for a quick one after eating. Sadly, I have to admit to an amateur mistake. Excited to see Moylan's Moylander Double IPA from Northern California on tap (not a common sight in Seattle), I boldly ordered it, thinking a big meal would help me function after this 8.5% hop bomb. Let me just say that a lower octane selection would've been a wiser choice.

The beer was great, a hoppy assault on the palate with the malt acting as backbone but not providing much flavor. After the meal, I felt sluggish. I figured it was lack of sleep or all the fries I ate, but later begrudgingly admitted that beer was a contributor to my snail-like afternoon pace. Let that be a lesson to anyone engaging in Beer at Lunch--stick with lower alcohol beers.

My trip to Collins reminded me that I need to visit more often. They'd just finished a keg of the Lagunitas Hop Stoopid and also had the Avery Fifteen, Victory Hop Devil and several more that interested me. Before you go to Collins, remember to check the Mariners schedule to figure out a good day to enjoy Happy Hour while avoiding the pre-game crowds.
