In the "Beer News" section of the most recent Beer Advocate magazine is a blurb on European drinking habits. According to a study, only ten percent of Europeans have a beer at lunch. The number seems low for Europe. I'd bet it's even smaller for Americans, since I rarely see anyone having a beer with lunch. Some employers even forbid lunchtime drinking. Unless you have a job that requires driving a car or operating heavy machinery, I don't understand it. One beer has absolutely no effect on my alertness or productivity (unless it's an ass-kicking eight-to-ten-percenter).
So why not have a beer at lunch? It's an idea that needs to be championed, and I'm setting an example by having a beer at lunch every day this week.
Monday's beer destination was Pike Brewing. It was an easy call since it's close to my work and I can eat lunch cheaply and quickly in Pike Place Market and still have time for a pint. I went with my usual IPA and it tasted fine, but I wish the Pike would give brewer Drew Cluley the opportunity to add more special beers to their lineup. More variety means more visits from beer enthusiasts.
Every time I visit the Pike at lunch, it blows my mind how few people are drinking beer, even among the tourists. They brew beer here, people! Embrace the Beer at Lunch idea and have a pint.
