On Friday, Diane Sawyer sat down with singer Rihanna in her first televised interview since she was assaulted by Chris Brown in February. In the interview, Sawyer asked the "Umbrella" singer probing questions that revealed a blow-by-blow account of the physical abuse Rihanna suffered at the hands of Brown.
Rihanna, who stated that Brown punched her, held her in a head lock on two occasions, and even bit her, soon realized that how she responded to Brown's assault would send a message to her young female fans.
“When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result into some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that part,” she told Diane Sawyer on "20/20”
“I couldn’t be held responsible for telling them, ‘Go back.’ Even if Chris never hit me again, who’s to say that their boyfriend won’t? Who’s to say they won’t kill these girls?”
Chris Brown was sentenced to five years' probation and community service for his assault, which Rihanna herself claimed was unexpected and excessive.
Rihanna, who admitted that she's angered by the fact that she still loves Brown, reiterated that despite her superstar status, she's an imperfect person.
“I’m a human being, and people put me on a very unrealistic pedestal. All these expectations--I’m not perfect.”
