Trina Turk, a women's contemporary brand famous for it's signature prints and sleek silhouettes, held the grand opening of it's new boutique in Bal Harbour Shops last week.  The private event's proceeds were donated to Women of Tomorrow Mentor and Scholarship Program, Inc.

It was hosted by Trina Turk herself, as well as a host of others.  For the design concept, Trina and designer Davin Mann or MR Architecture and Decor worked together.  The 2,000 square foot is a tribute to Miami, with a arched entry that opens into a white terrazzo tiled space juxtaposing graphic concrete block grids and elegant metal lattice screens along with walls.  The boutique features the vibrant hues of Miami's seaside.  An oval sitting area is composed of an aqua curved banquette frame by lime green linen draperies suspended from a central chandelier (see slideshow below).

This Miami Fashion & Style Examiner got the chance to sit with Trina before the festivities.

Examiner:  What was the first thing that you ever designed?

TT:  When i was a girl, about 7 or 8, I made dresses for my doll, using fabric scraps.  They were all very simple shapes and bright prints.

Examiner:  Why did you feel the need to open this stand alone boutique at Bal Harbour Shops?  After all, your pieces are sold in both Saks and Neiman Marcus here.

TT: I wanted to give customers an opportunity to see more.  You may only see a few pieces from a Collection in a department store.  I wanted to give women the entire experience.

Examiner:  Describe you own personal style.

TT:  I wear a lot of my own label.  I also wear a lot of vintage.  I LOVE to shop!

Examiner:  Early in your career, you worked for both Brittania Jeans and Ocean Pacific.  How did these jobs help to mold you into the Trina Turk of today?

TT:  I learned things from both.  Brittania was my first job.  At OP, I actually designed a line for Juniors and 7-14 girls.  I learned about prints there and print coloration.

Examiner:  What makes the fit of your pants so amazing?

TT:  We spend a lot of time on the fit of our pants, but also on everything.  Everytime there is new fabric, there is new fit.  We recognize that you can't use the same pattern for all fabrics.  And we have a "real woman" fit model.  She has curves like real women do.  We also use a fake tummy on our fit model, to make our pants fit truer to size.

Examiner:   Finally, tell us about your partnerships with Hue and also Schumacher Fabrics.

TT:  Well Hue approached me and I thought it would be a fun collaboration, and it is.  I sough Schumacher out while looking for printed fabrics that could be used both indoors and out.
