I love seeing a movie for free. Even a bad movie is enjoyable if you know that you found a free way to occupy yourself for an evening. If you also love the pessimism and beautiful shadows of a film noir, the Denver Public Library has the perfect series for you.
The “Post War Film Noir” series at the Denver Public Library’s central branch has its next screening on Tuesday, April 7th at 6-9pm. They will be showing “Laura,” 1944, which was nominated for five Academy Awards and won one for Best Cinematography.
It stars Gene Tierney as the title character, a dangerous and beautiful seductress. Clifton Webb was nominated for the Academy Award for his role as a homosexual society columnist, and Vincent Price plays a Southern gigolo. Vincent Price is enough to make a free movie worth it, let alone Vincent Price as a Southern gigolo.
Later films in the series include “Bad Day at Black Rock,” and “The Lady from Shanghai,” which was directed by and stars Orson Welles.
For an enjoyable evening at the movies, check out the Denver Library’s Post War Film Noir series. Did I mention that it’s free?
