Catherine Hardwicke, the director of the blockbuster movie Twilight written by Arizona’s own best-selling author Stephenie Meyer, shares her intimate feelings about the process of filming the Twilight movie. The book reveals some secrets about her favorite scenes, along with the challenges of filming outdoors when the weather wasn’t always cooperative. Much of this information comes from Hardwicke’s personal journal and includes her favorite parts of the movie and photos behind the scenes.
The book release date is March 17th and what a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your own personal copy. Twilight: Director's Notebook: The Story of How We Made the Movie Based on the Novel by Stephenie Meyer, is available at Amazon.com and most retail chains.

Did you know that Stephenie Meyer appears in the movie in one scene?
Hardwicke has directed several other movies including:
The Nativity Story 2006, Lords of Dogtown 2005, and Thirteen 2003
In this candid interview, Hardwicke talks about the many challenges of filming in Oregon. The weather that is perfect for the fictional Cullen vampire family was not conducive to good location filming. The sky was unpredictable, cloudy one moment and sunny the next. Then there were the beautiful wooded areas. Lovely to see on screen, but can you imagine lugging all that film equipment through the woods, mud, over rocks . . . I’m sure you get the idea.

The most difficult elements in outdoor location shoots are moving equipment, setting up and tearing down a set, ambient noise from wildlife, rustling leaves, and other things like aircraft. Mother Nature, as wise as she may be, doesn’t provide any electrical outlets in the middle of the forest and then there’s water and food for the entire crew. Movie and television productions take a large team of people to make things look natural and effortless on screen, when it’s a major undertaking behind the cameras. Hardwicke discusses her time in post-production at Industrial Light and Magic, to get those physical vampire stunts to look natural, not to mention Edward’s sparkle in the sunlight.
A great deal of thought went into the physical actions of the actors to convey the initial awkwardness between Bella and Edward. Then there was the very carefully orchestrated first kiss that was so very, very, nice and slow.
