Across from the Empire State Building on 33rd Street, there’s a place called Little Italy Pizza that makes a very good slice of pizza. Why the place is called Little Italy Pizza is a mystery, but that doesn’t matter really. What matters is that they know how to make pizza. The regular slice was thin and very crispy, and the bottom side of the crust had a grainy texture that indicates quality. The slice was so crispy that it produced crunchy audio effects. That’s the zone to be in.
The cheese was flavorful, pungent but not overbearing, and there’s wasn’t too much of it. The sauce was more than just canned tomatoes and was seasoned with spices. Everything was in balance on the slice. Good proportions of cheese to sauce to crust.
The décor at Little Italy Pizza is one of a kind: wall-to-wall diamond wall panels. Think tool box in the back of a pickup. Hard to comprehend, but definitely unique. Drinks come from a self-serve station, which is rare. The menu is simple: a couple types of calzones, garlic knots and rolls. That’s it. Usually a small menu means good pizza. More time to focus on perfecting pizza and less messing around with other stuff.
A slice goes for $2.75 at Little Italy Pizza, while a whole regular pie goes for $15. This place is a must if you’re in midtown. 2 East 33rd Street, at the corner of 33rd and 5th. 212-481-5200.
