Get Your Freak On

June 29, 5:42 PM
by Mare Trevathan, Denver Theater Examiner

Freak Train host GerRee Hinshaw
--update:  Hinshaw will be out Monday, 6/30 due to a family emergency.  Filling in is the also mahvalous Jess Robblee of TRUNKS.--

If you've never seen FREAK TRAIN (the final Monday of every month at 8pm at The Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo St. in Denver), you really must.

It's a little like the Grand Canyon.

No, it's nothing like the Grand Canyon.

But you do have to stand LIVE in front of it, mouth slightly agape, in order to fully appreciate the spectacle.

A caveat right here at the top:
This is not an endorsement of quality.  As what's essentially an open mic night, FREAK TRAIN is a gamble.  At its best, it's an elevation of the human spirit; a triumphant example of what can happen when strangers come together with a blind trust in one another's humor and capacity for empathy.  At its worst, it's still just a $5 cover and free beer.

One thing about FREAK TRAIN you can count on:  host GerRee Hinshaw is consistently brilliant and charming and funny.  Her ability to improvise a thread to bind the night's disparate performances together is astounding.  Usually it culminates in an extemporaneous song reflecting on the evening.  And this chica can SING.

Interested in performing?  There are 12 five-minute slots available (well, 13-  but you'll learn about that when you get there) by sign-in beginning at 7pm.
