Denver actor/director Jeremy Make, and life-long friend Andy Raney, both 25, are traversing the country in a golf kart on a 100 day quest for the heart of America. Driven by the question "Who is America?", the duo is making a documentary, book and website about and for artists across the country.
Jeremy paused from somewhere in the deep South, to give me a little e-update on kART Across America:
"Andy and I have known each other since middle school but he told me about the idea about three years ago after college. He'd been inspired while traveling with the Semester at Sea program all around the world and felt like he didn't have an answer when foreigners asked about his homeland.
I wanted to be a part of it, very simply. I wanted to give people a chance they didn't have before, to talk, to create, to express, to inspire me and others. Andy and I talked about it, gave the idea some substance with the infusion of the doc, book, and website about and for artists, looked for sponsors (found only one small one in HDR, an architecture and engineering consulting firm at hdrinc.com), bought a golf kart and hit the road. Yay."
Story from the road: "100-mile stretch in Arizona desert. 10:30pm. No lights anywhere, haven't seen a car for three hours. Headlights go out. Gas gauge fails. Kart starts to putter and fails completely. We consider camping until morning, but I found a stray fuse in the back of the glove compartment. It works. Kart runs better than it ever did. Rocket screams overhead at the speed of sound. Right overhead. Maybe 100 feet above our heads. Andy and I don't speak for the next 75 miles (about three hours) out of fear.
Oh, and there was a gigantic spider (tarantula?) on a California highway somewhere. The size of my face, swear to Someone Important."
Story from one of the artists they've interviewed: "Angus Galloway told me that he felt seasick when drawing with one hand so he draws with two now. On different sides of the paper, looking at only one hand. We participated in two-handed drawing with him in Atlanta."
