Santa Elena Canyon, Big Bend NP, Texas

There are few places I've visited that have struck my soul with such resonance as Big Bend National Park on the north side of the Rio Grande in extreme West Texas.

As remote and sparsely populated a region as any in the country, this is the perfect cold-weather destination - summer highs here rocket well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. But when the weather is mild - as it is for the next few months - thisis the ideal place to hike, backpack, run the river, or just get away from it all.

My choice for civilization in the area is of course Terlingua Ghost Town and my picks for eating and drinking are La Kiva and the Starlight Theatre.
