You get an extra second this year.
You *did* know that, didn't you? The Earth is slowing down ever-so-slightly, so in order to keep the clocks aligned with the actual "solar day", there will be an extra second added at midnight, New Year's Eve. For more information, Wikipedia has a discussion.
But, for me, a more-interesting question is:
So. What should you do with your extra second?
We all get a whole extra second - so HOW should we spend it?
I would certainly love to hear your ideas, but to get you all started, I somewhat-humbly hereby present *my* suggestions... Part 1. These are my "serious suggestions". Come back again to read my "less-serious" suggestions in the next column.
Here goes. And, yeah, I kind of got carried away above the "Top 10".
23) From my niece Sarah, mother of an active 3-yr-old: Just RELAX. Take a deep breath and take ONE SECOND to wonderfully do *nothing*.
22) Question Authority
21) Visualize World Peace
20) Take the first step
19) Make the first move
18) Ask her. ASK HER NOW!
17) Say "Yes".
16) Smile
15) Wink
14) Allow yourself a "Senior Moment"
13) Also Allow yourself a "Senior Moment" (oops)
12) Do your "Happy Dance"
11) Stop to think
10) Ask "Why?"
9) Ask "Why NOT?"
8) Gaze at the stars and contemplate the 186,000 miles that light will travel in that second
7) Steal a Kiss
6) Pay a compliment
5) Steal Away
4) Fall in Love ("It only takes a moment")
3) Hug your grandkids
2) Give someone a "second" chance
And my Number 1 thing to do with your special New Years Leap Second:
1) Gaze into your lover's eyes: The one second will seem to stretch to eternity.
