Gracelyn and friends at the Cherokee Rose Cluster

This weekend, Atlanta is the hub of the dog show world as the Cherokee Rose Cluster of dog shows takes place at the Atlanta Expo Center South in Jonesboro.  Thousands of dogs from all over the country will converge, looking to earn points towards their Championships, new obedience or Rally titles, and see who'll be Top Dog during each day's competition.  There is a small fee to park, and no charge to attend the show as a spectator.  This is a kid-friendly, indoor event, but please leave your own dog at home.  AKC rules state that only dogs entered at the show can be present.  Bring your checkbook or credit cards, though, because the vendors at these shows are great, and you'll find great prices on all things dog...except the actual dog, of course!  For a list of breeds and their judging times, check out the judging program.

Today, the Gwinnett Humane Society's 9th Annual Hogs for Dogs takes place.  Grand Marshal Rhubarb Jones is once again at the head of the Harley line, taking off from Stone Mountain Harley Davidson at 10:30, with in-person registration from 9 to 10:30.  (Psst...it's ok to ride something other than a Harley Davidson...all bikes are welcome!)  All proceeds benefit the Gwinnett Humane Society, and the day is much more than "just" the ride, so even if you don't do the ride, stop by Stone Mountain Harley-Davidson for the after-ride fun.  There will be food, vendors, dog adoptions, raffles, live music, a silent auction and lots more.

Intown Healthy Hound is the site for a fur-flying, soap-slinging fund raiser today.  It's the always popular Weim Wash.  Any dog, not just Weimeraners, gets bathed for only $15, and the proceeds benefit Atlanta Weimeraner Rescue.  The dog wash happens from 11am to 3pm.

Today from noon to 4, Rescue Me! Animal Project is hosting an adoption event at the Midtown PetSmart, and then tonight from 8pm until 2am, they're hosting a benefit in Decatur at Cantina El Tesoro.  There'll be live music, silent auctions, great food and drinks and 15% of the restaurant's revenue tonight will go to Rescue Me! Animal Project.

Sirius Dog Agility Training Center is starting a new series of 8-week agility training classes on August 24th.  Classes are held at their training center in the Decatur area (near DeKalb Medical Center). If you like spending time with your dog, the exciting sport of dog agility may be for you. Dog agility is a sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. There are openings in both beginning and advanced class levels. Email the Class Scheduler for more information and to get signed up.

For those who already have some experience with agility, Sirius is holding run-thrus today and next Saturday from 10 to noon at their Scottdale, GA facility.

Wednesday evening at East Andrews in Buckhead get set for a Yappy Hour party to benefit PAWS Atlanta.  Take your furry friend to the terrace at East Andrews for treats for them and specials for you.  PAWS Atlanta has a 5-star charity rating from Charity Navigator, so you know the money you help them raise will go to help animals in need.

Dogma Dog Care in Smyrna is hosting two pet first aid classes on Sunday 8/30, one at 11am and one at 3pm.  Call 770-436-4346 to sign up, or email.

And early warning on a really fun event - Dixie Dock Dogs is proud to host their inaugural Dock Dog event, the Fishing Creek Outfitters Throwdown, from August 28 to 30th in Milledgeville, GA.  You've seen dock diving events on ESPN, and this is your chance to watch one in person, or maybe even try your dog's hand (paw?) at dock diving.  If you've never been to a Dock Dog event before, this information is designed to help you know if you want to compete or just watch the fun.  To register, check out the fees and schedule of events page.  There's $1,000 up for grabs in prizes for entrants, and wonderful gift baskets just waiting to be won, including one with over $500 of merchandise in it.  Dixie Dock Dogs is a non-profit group, and will use the proceeds from this event to fund their favorite charity, Chase Away K-9 Cancer.
