One of these puppies grew up to be a great agility

School's started, and though fall is still several weeks away, the fall routines are starting.  But that doesn't mean the dog days of summer are over quite yet - there's still plenty of fun to go around in the coming week.

The Humane Society of Cobb County will be part of the cookout at Harry's Farmers Market in Marietta.  The cookout happens today from noon to 4, and proceeds will benefit HSCC, so skip lunch and join the fun at Harry's.

This coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Atlanta will be the hub of the dog show world as the Cherokee Rose Cluster of dog shows takes place at the Atlanta Expo Center South in Jonesboro.  Thousands of dogs from all over the country will converge, looking to earn points towards their Championships, new obedience or Rally titles, and see who'll be Top Dog during each day's competition.  There is a small fee to park, and no charge to attend the show as a spectator.  This is a kid-friendly, indoor event, but please leave your own dog at home.  AKC rules state that only dogs entered at the show can be present.  Bring your checkbook or credit cards, though, because the vendors at these shows are great, and you'll find great prices on all things dog...except the actual dog, of course!  For a list of breeds and their judging times, check out the judging program.

Need to have a better-behaved dog?  Some of the best trainers in the south are members of the Atlanta Obedience Club, and the next session of classes starts this Monday the 17th.  From puppy classes all the way up to advanced competition classes, AOC can help you and your dog have a better relationship, plus they have discounts for new students.

Next Saturday, August 22nd, Gwinnett Humane Society's 9th Annual Hogs for Dogs event takes place.  Grand Marshal Rhubarb Jones is once again at the head of the Harley line, taking off from Stone Mountain Harley Davidson at 10:30, and registration is from 9 to 10:30 the day of the ride.  (Psst...it's ok to ride something other than a Harley Davidson...all bikes are welcome!)  Register on-line or register that day, but be part of the fun.  All proceeds benefit the Gwinnett Humane Society, and the day is much more than "just" the ride, so even if you don't do the ride, stop by Stone Mountain Harley-Davidson for the after-ride fun.  There will be food, vendors, dog adoptions, raffles, live music, a silent auction and lots more.

If you're more into dog washing than Harley-riding, then head for Intown Healthy Hound on Saturday, August 22 for the Weim Wash.  Any dog gets bathed for only $15, and the proceeds benefit Atlanta Weimeraner Rescue.  The dog wash happens from 11am to 3pm.

Another Project CatSnip low-cost vaccine and microchipping clinic is being held from 9 to 4 at the Clayton County Animal Control center in Jonesboro.  Rabies vaccines are only $10, and vaccine packages are only $35.  Microchipping, including lifetime registration, is only $25.

A huge mass rescue transport departs the Foundry at Puritan Mill on Friday evening, August 21st.  Hundreds of dogs will be sent from the Atlanta area to shelters in the northeast for adoption there.  The event is from 7 to 9pm, and PawsAtlanta would love to have you there as their guest.  Email to get on the list.

Dogma Dog Care in Smyrna is hosting two pet first aid classes on Sunday 8/30, one at 11am and one at 3pm.  Call 770-436-4346 to sign up, or email.

Starting on September 4th, it will no longer be legal for unattended dogs to be tethered in Fulton County.  If you or someone you know lives in the county and tethers a dog, start now to find a better, more humane way to keep that dog at home.
