Where the need arises, volunteers appear to fill it. Right now, animal shelters and rescue groups are dealing with a flood of owner-turn-in's, and in one county, the solution is clear - Sunday hours for adoptions, so fewer dogs and cats are euthanized.
What many people don't know is that owner-turn-ins are often put down quickly. This is because, obviously, the owner isn't looking for the dog, so time doesn't need to be given for the owner to find the dog. The owner knows where the dog is...the owner put the dog into the animal control system, and when overcrowding occurs, those former family members are often the first in line for euthanasia.
Starting tomorrow, the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter will be open on Sundays for prospective adopters to find new furry friends. The adoption fee is $100, which includes the vet fees. The fee for senior citizens to adopt is only $50, and also includes vet fees. Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement Service works to make sure that every adoptable animal they take in has the best chance at a new home, and they work with rescue groups throughout the Atlanta area. Their website doesn't yet reflect the new Sunday hours, which are noon to 4.
This afternoon, indulge your taste for good wine and your love of dogs at the same time. Marietta Wine Market is hosting a wine-tasting from 2-4, and the only fee to partake is a donation to Adopt A Greyhound, Atlanta's oldest Greyhound rescue group. The featured wines will be Kendall Jackson Winery's line of Dog House Wines, noted for their distinctive nose, soft bite and generosity. Whenever a bottle of Dog House Wine is purchased, a donation goes to a fund to provide seeing eye dogs for the blind.
