It seems there's always a breed of dog that's "the worse breed ever." In the 70's, it was Doberman Pinschers. In the 80's, it was Rottweilers. Now, it's Pit Bulls, a breed with such a bad reputation that some people don't even question whether or not one would make a good pet, they would rather have them outlawed.
The truth is, they do make great pets. So-called Pit Bulls can be some of the sweetest, most loving and loyal dogs ever. Before they were bred to fight, they were bred to be guarding, working, family dogs, so they have a deep desire to please their person.
It's never about the dog or breed of dog, it's about the person who's raised and trained the dog. Did they want to emphasize the sweet and loyal part of their dog, or did they want a "tough" dog? There will always be some people who own dogs for the wrong reason, or fail to train the dogs they own. Those people should not own dogs, and in all likelihood, no matter what breed of dog they owned, they would have an anti-social dog. This is not the fault of the dog, nor is it the fault of the breed. It is a human problem, which is why breed-specific legislation is never the right answer.
For proof, take the case of the puppy who was found wandering in an ally, bite wounds all over his head. The vet who treated him thought he had probably been used as a bait dog to train fighting dogs and somehow managed to escape. Check out the video for this dog's story:
If you're a person who wants to add a furry family member this summer, and are someone who will take the time and patience to train the dog you get, don't overlook so-called Pit Bulls in your quest for a new best friend. Sometimes rescue groups don't identify them as Pit Bulls, but call them terrier/bulldog mixes. In truth, it's impossible to define a Pit Bull by it's looks, because in so doing, you would also be defining other, similar breeds, like American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and even Bulldogs. Thankfully, in addition to sharing a common set of physical features, they share a common personality type - sweet, loyal and smart. They could just be the best dog you've ever had.
