The dog that sparked a line of books - Bill.  Kyla Duffy photo

Once upon a time, a young lady with a big heart agreed to foster a male Boston Terrier.  He had been a puppy-mill dog, confined to a small crate with no social interaction.  When Bill ended up in Kyla Duffy's home, he was a frightened mess.  There was no light in his eyes, he wasn't interested in toys, he wasn't interested in going for walks or playing with other dogs.  He just cowered and shook.

Kyla Duffy understood that, with work, Bill would be a wonderful companion for someone, so undertook his emotional rehabilitation.  It took a long time, but after a while, Bill became interested in learning, interested in meeting new people and dogs, interested in life.

And by then, Kyla was in love with Bill, so she became a foster-failure.  Bill is now her dog, and is the inspiration for a wonderful project.  Thus, Happy Tails Books was born.

"Lost Souls: FOUND!  Inspirational Stories of Boston Terriers" is the first in a series of books about rescued dogs, their stories and their new lives.  It's only fitting that Kyla started with Boston Terriers, and when she searched for stories, she tapped Boston Terrier rescue groups from around the country for their best stories.  It's available now online, and more books are in the works for later this year and early next.  A book featuring rescued Golden Retrievers is next in line, with Australian Cattle Dogs, Hounds, Terriers, Pit Bulls, Chihuahuas, German Shepherds, Boxers, Dachshunds, Rottweilers and All-American Dogs (mutts) on the drawing board.

If you are the owner of a rescued dog and want to share your story for an upcoming book, Kyla and her co-editor Lowrey Mumford, would love to hear from you.  They're looking for stories as short as one paragraph up to 1200 words.  And if you have more than one rescued dog, write about all of them if you'd like.

And, as you may have already guessed, a portion of the proceeds from book sales goes to rescue groups.  The groups that help collect the stories are given the bulk of the donations, so if you got your dog from a rescue group, be sure to share this story with them so they can gather stories and donations, too.  Rescue groups wishing to become rescue partners with Happy Tails Books can submit their information here.

This is one of those win/win/win situations:  the dogs with the happy ending to their rescue tales win, the new owners with great rescue dogs win, and the rescue groups win, too, thanks to the generosity of Kyla Duffy and Lowrey Mumford.
