Dogs 101: What are the top 10 things kids should know about dogs in Atlanta?
Children and dogs go together like summer and flip flops. This natural combination can have bad outcomes if the kids aren't taught basic manners around dogs, and don't understand that dogs are thinking, feeling beings too. So here's what every child should know about dogs:
- Never touch a dog without asking it's owner first. Some owners don't want their dogs petted, and some dogs don't want to be petted, either.
- Pet a dog under it's chin or along it's side. Some dogs might get scared if you pet the top of their head.
- Do not stare into a dog's eyes. Some dogs feel threatened by this.
- Try to be quiet. Some dogs are scared by loud noises.
- Try to move slowly. Some dogs are scared if you jump around.
- Never feed a strange dog. Some dogs are on a diet can only eat special dog food.
- Dogs don't like to have their hair pulled, just like you don't.
- Dogs have sharp teeth and can hurt you just by accident, so don't put your hand in a dog's mouth.
- Most dogs are not mean. If you are nice to them, they'll be nice to you.
- Don't hug a dog. They don't understand, and they can't hug you back.
