In laid-back southern California, you'd expect the dogs to be cool. You'd expect to see them in sunglasses, hanging at the beach, and maybe splashing in the surf.
What you might not expect is a surf competition for dogs, attended by thousands of spectators, put on for a good cause.
Saturday, the 4th annual Loews Dog Surfing Competition was held at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, and over $10,000 was raised for the Modest Needs Foundation, a non-profit partner of the resort. The goal of Modest Needs is to prevent self-sufficient people and families from entering the cycle of poverty from one bad setback, to help working people with unaffordable work-related expenses and to strengthen small non-profits by providing them an opportunity to get grants to further their work in their communities.
To those ends, around 60 surfer-dogs brought their humans, maybe some sunscreen and their surfboard. At 11, the Small Surf Dogs, those under 40 pounds, took to the waves to impress the judges. Then at 11:45, the Large Surf Dogs got a turn, followed at 12:30 by the Tandem Surfing competition, for either dog and human or two dogs on the same board. The three judges scored each entry on their confidence level, length of ride and overall ability to "grip it and rip it" on three rides each through the waves.
Prizes included the top prize of a getaway at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, and the bragging rights that come with owning the San Diego waves.
A favorite in the Large Dog category shows off his style in this video. Though he didn't win, he did hang ten (or, more accurately, 18) very tenaciously, as any Bulldog should.
The video from the third annual competition shows a lot of the colorful competitors, and also features Buddy the Bulldog showing his stuff on a boogie board. Don't miss the Corgi with a monkey on his back, surfing backwards.
The winner of the Small Dog event, TJ, shows his post-surfing form in this video.
The winner of the Large Dog event, Kalani, shows off her pure joy in the waves in this video.
If watching these dogs makes you think your dog could have a little surfin' attitude in him, Loews Coronado Beach Resort offers Su-Ruff's Up doggie surf camp. Not only does your dog get a shot at some of the sweetest waves in the west, he also ends up with a bandanna and board shorts, so he can look the part of a cool surfer dude.
