Karen Ramstead and her pretty sled dogs - Ramstead photo

This weekend, it's a nice, long weekend - three days to enjoy the Atlanta area, your dog and to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom to enjoy this weekend.  No matter what else you do this weekend, please remember to thank everyone in uniform that you see for their service, and take a moment to honor those whose lives were given in battle.  That's really what Memorial Day weekend is all about.

If you're looking for fun, there's plenty of that this weekend, and there's an event next weekend in Bristol, TN that you might want to plan to attend.

This morning, grab your running shoes and head for Alpharetta for the Celebrate America 5K and 10K race.  Registration starts at 6:30 and the races start at 7:30 at the AMC Mansell Crossing 14 on NOrth Point Pkwy. in Alpharetta.  The course is fast and flat, is a great warm-up for the Peachtree Road Race and best of all, it benefits Happy Tails, Canine Assistants and the Alpharetta Junior Woman's Club.

There are 41 meetup groups dedicated to dogs within 25 miles of Atlanta.  Visit the search page, plug in your own zip code and find the closest ones to you, or those that interest you the most.  Some are breed-specific, some are for dog loving singles, and some are just for fun.  If you're looking for things to do with your dog, or just looking to hook up play dates for your dog, this is a great place to start.

And next weekend, if you're a fan of working dogs, there's an event in Bristol, TN that you don't want to miss.  The Working Dog Symposium is on May 30th from 9:00 to 4:00 at the National Guard Armory - 611 BluffCity Hwy. Bristol TN. Presenters and demonstrations about working dog breeds.

The group, Siberian Husky Assist Rescue is hosting a one day Working Dog Symposium which will include Iditarod Finisher Karen Ramstead as one of several guest speakers. Karen and her team of Siberians successfully completed the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2008. In 2008 her team was third fastest in Iditarod history for a purebred Siberian Husky team. Ms. Ramstead is donating her time because she understands the need for great homes for great dogs.

Other speakers include Dr. Al Townshend DVM-Iditarod Veterinarian and contributing Author to the text "Canine Sports Medicine."  He has received the coveted "Golden Stethescope Award" from the Iditarod for contributions above and beyond the call of duty in bringing veterinary care to the dogs of the Iditarod. He will speak on Veterinary Medicine for the Working Dog.  Paula Shupe will give a talk on protection dog training, Dale Myers about hunting dog, Jeff Sparks about bloodhound tracking, and there'll be a talk on training for Canine Weight Pull.  All of the presenters will have a booth set up for one on one attention.  There's a $5 fee, and no dogs except those that are part of the demonstration are allowed in the building.

This is an excellent event for anyone who wants to know more about training a dog to work, conditioning the dog to work, and wants to understand how to tap into what their dog is bred to do in order to excel.
