JoAnn Shorter is a memory artist. No, that doesn't mean she exhibits in a blank gallery, allowing patrons to imagine their own memories hanging on the wall! That means she takes the tangible product of a person's memories - their photographs - and turns them into art. For the last decade, that has meant memory albums, part scrapbook and part heaven, that often make the recipient cry sweet tears. But just recently, JoAnn has discovered another passion: clocks.
The clock idea came to her after she tried her hand at quilting and decided she didn't have the patience to sit at a sewing machine and stitch a million small pieces of fabric together. Instead, she went to her photo editing software and played with an eight-point star design with a photograph. She mirrored the image around the star for a kaleidescope effect and fell in love with what she saw. She knew she was on to something, but wasn't sure what. A few months later, she hit on the idea of custom clocks, and the rest is history.
The images JoAnn likes best for these clocks are ones where the subject in the photo is vertical. That means a dog coming towards you with a toy in his mouth, or jumping up, or sitting up make the best clock images. She works with photos ranging from snapshots to images taken by professional photographers, and she works with several metro-area pros to add an extra dimension to their offerings for their clients. Her clocks are 10", 12", 14", 18" and 28" in diameter, meaning that there's a size to fit every wall space. The battery-operated quartz movement keeps accurate time, but the photo image is really the star. And for clients who just want the image, not another clock on the wall, no problem...JoAnn can make any size without the clock, too. If you'd rather have the image as a custom tabletop, just ask - it can probably be done.
JoAnn Shorter shares her life with hubby Eric, her Mom, and Pugs Smooch and Buster. Smooch will do just about anything for a belly-rub and is an angel, while Buster gets by on his charisma, which usually gets him out of trouble when he's done something bad.
So, for the dog-lover in your life, what could be a more unique gift than a clock featuring 12 of their favorite furry friend?
