Local Labrador retrievers have a lot to wag about this week, as a rescue group in Cumming and a service dog in Norcross did the breed proud.
At the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show last week, more than just breed ribbons were handed out. Pedigree Pet Foods, the main sponsor for Westminster's dog show and many others throughout the country, handed our their rescue group awards, and Breed Rescue of the Year went to Labrador Friends of the South Inc., located in Cumming. President Jenny Joyce-Barbine and Director Elena Pesavento were in New York to accept the award and were treated to box seats for the dog show.
And a local woman and her Lab were runners-up in the Service category for the 2008 ACE awards, which were given out at the Westminster Kennel Club show earlier this week. Margo Gathright-Dietrich and her service dog, Benton, live in Norcross. Benton is not only Margo's helper, he's her dance partner, as they do canine musical freestyle as their hobby. This is not the first service dog Margo has shared her life with, but Benton, a Canine Companions for Independence-trained yellow Lab, has been runner-up for the ACE award more than once. Maybe 2009 will be the charm for them both.
