With a PG rating and family-friendly marketing, the new movie "Marley and Me" had a better Christmas Day box office than any movie, ever. The previous contender was "Ali" which opened on Christmas Day, 2001, with a box office of just over $10 million that day.
A cute little Labrador Retriever beat that mark by over $4 million dollars, opening on Thursday at $14.75 million in one-day box office.
But apparently a lot of theatre-goers hadn't read the book and weren't prepared for the movie's ending. If you're in that category and are intending to go see "Marley and Me" this weekend, take tissues. And if you're taking children, you might want to skip the end of the movie and hit the snack bar instead.
The book is a great book...if you've seen the movie, you still might want to do a little winter reading, as there are things in the book that didn't make it to the big screen. If you've read the book, then you know what you're in for at the theatre...yes, there are very funny moments in the story, but this is the story of two people who share the WHOLE life of a dog, not just the funny parts. And as dog owners know, there are a lot of bittersweet moments when sharing life with a dog, and some very sad ones. These furry family members don't live long enough.
So if you're headed for a theatre this weekend to see "Marley and Me," be prepared for some very funny scenes, a movie with literally dozens of dogs used for the starring role, and a movie with a very sad and moving ending.
Take tissues.
