After doing a search on monthly pet holidays, I was shocked to learn that today (January 14th) is 'National Dress Up Your Pet' day! And I almost missed it! I also learned that there are many other “holidays” I apparently had no knowledge about…

For example, did you know that March 3rd is ‘What If Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs?’ Day? (Well for starters, my cats would be helping themselves to all the tuna fish in the pantry right about now, and my dogs wouldn’t have to wake me up at three o’clock in the morning to go potty…)

Then April 1-7 is ‘National Scoop the Poop’ week. And right behind that (get it, BEHIND..okay please ignore my corny puns) is April 25th ‘Don't Step in the Dog Poop' Day.  (Shouldn’t this be something we strive for everyday?) And does this mean we haven’t scooped the poop since the first week in April, and you really should be cautious of where we step? I sure hope companies like Pet Butler market this holiday month well.

June 26th is ‘Ugly Dog Day.’ You’re welcome Chinese Crested dog lovers.

And if you can say that your job, or even your life, is like trying to herd cats, then this day is for you, December 15 - Cat Herders Day. (Hmm, I prefer seeing the literal meaning instead…)

Of course there are some good monthly holidays out there that remind us what being a pet owner is all about.  Like February 20th is ‘Love Your Pet’ Day; June 7-13 is ‘Pet Appreciation’ Week; and June 21-26 is ‘Take-Your-Pet-to-Work’ Week.

And holidays that remind us to thank those in our lives that help us take care of our pets: March 1-7 - National Pet Sitters Week. (Pet Sitters International); October 11-17 - National Veterinary Technician Week; November 1-7 - National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, etc.

But for most dogs, every day is a holiday! So be like your dog and celebrate every day! (But don’t forget to put Fido in his pink tutu tomorrow.)
