Love ‘em, then leave ‘em. That is the new concept hitting the doggie market. In a world where we can rent a home, furniture, and movies; Should we be surprised that the idea of renting a pet would become just another thing added to this list? Companies, such as Flexpetz, are trying to do just that.
According to the Flexpetz website: “The concept of Flexpetz originated with a group of dogs lovers who sadly accepted that they could not provide a dog with the full-time care and attention that goes along with responsible dog ownership. The reasons they could not own a dog included: restrictive pet ownership rules where they lived; regular business travel involving days away from home, or a busy family schedule. Flexpetz provides members with local access to a variety of dogs, all of whom are rescued or rehomed, very lovable and fully trained. Flexpetz members can spend from just a few hours to a number of days with each of our dogs. The dogs are available in varied breed sizes to ensure compatibility with the member's individual lifestyles and unique circumstances.”
However, this “puppy love” comes with a hefty price tag. First, there is a monthly Membership Fee of $99.95. Then there is a Daily Doggy Time charge (Daily Doggy Time is equal to a day, or part of day, you spend with a Flexpetz dog) at a rate of $45.00 per day. Then you will be billed for 4 Daily Doggy Times per month. You are not required to take out a Flexpetz for any set number of days, but you will be billed for these minimum four days regardless of actual usage at a rate of $45.00 per day.
And the price list seems to go on and on…
But it seems Flexpetz has hit a snag.
In an announcement somewhat discretely posted on its website: “In July 2008, the company put operations on temporary hold. Politicians from Boston decided to mount a campaign specifically targeting Flexpetz. Their agenda was to bring in a law "banning pet rental". The proposition was introduced by these elected politicians who NEVER spoke to the company, or visited our facilities, or met our dogs or spoke with our members. If they had, they would have quickly realized that FLEXPETZ is not a "Blockbuster for dogs", but a new way of approaching responsible dog adoption and ownership. In order to proceed with the planned expansion to 100+ locations, Flexpetz has two options: either obtain new capital OR license the Flexpetz model to an interested party."
So until then, Fluffy is off the market.
Oh well, go volunteer at your local shelter instead.
