Baseball news is not restricted to the All-Star Game in St. Louis tonight.
There's a story out of Philadelphia that three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez is close to signing a deal with the Phillies. Martinez, who last pitched for the Dominican in the World Baseball Classic, has been rumored to be signing with several teams this season but there is uncertainity over the health of his arm.
If he signs, what this means is that the Phillies may not be interested in either Erik Bedard or Jarrod Washburn anymore. Philadelphia was rumored to be the most interested team in Bedard.
MVP CANDIDATES: Carl Crawford made a home-run-saving catch in the seventh. Curtis Granderson hit a triple in the AL eighth. Adam Jones hits a sacrifice fly to send Granderson home with the go-ahead run, 4-3, in the eighth.
Could any of those be the MVP. They also contributed to the victory - if it holds up at this point - but do their efforts rate a MVP award. A sacrifice fly?
I remember back in 2001, I was one of the three official scorers for the All-Star Game at Safeco. Major League Baseball officials wanted our decison right about now, in the eighth. My other two collegues, both writers, deliberated at bit. But it was a no-brainer. Cal Ripken, Jr. had hit a dramatic home run. He was the guy and the other writers quickly agreed.
This is not so definitive. I don't think Molina can win it now, especially since he has just been replaced.
My guess at this point - Granderson.
