It's over for the Washingtion Huskies. After today's 24-23 loss to UCLA, they won't get enough wins (six) to be bowl eligible this season.
It means that QB Jake Locker, one of the best athletes ever to wear the purple and gold, will likely leave the school with one of the worst career records in history. If Locker, a junior, doesn't declare early for the NFL I would be shocked. And if he does come back for one last season, my admiration would be boundless.
What I can't understand in watching the Bruins loss, is how UCLA WR Terrence Austin's 29-yard third-quarter touchdown was ruled a catch and why UW's Jermaine Kearse's fourth-quarter TD catch was not.
Austin made a remarkable play, bouncing off the ground, which flipped the ball up then he gathered it back in while rolling into the end zone. But the reason it bounced is because it hit the ground with him. The ground allowed it to bounce. How else could it have happened? He didn't have his hands under it. He didn't flip it in air. Why didn't the Huskies coaching staff, who ever is in charge of telling Coach Steve Sarkisian to challenge the call, ask for a review. They had a case.
As far as Kearse's catch is concerned, it's amazing how close and picky they are about catching the ball when they review the tape. He got his foot down (both feet), he had the ball secure in his possession as he fell out of bounds. You can't reverse that. There was nothing compelling about it to change.
Those two plays will be front and center in the post-game discussions.
But, that's the way the season has gone for this snake-bitten bunch.
