Tenth: Pitching quickly being depleted

July 15, 9:10 PM
by Bob Sherwin, Seattle Sports Examiner

This is setting up as perhaps another controversial ending for the 79th All-Star Game. Could it be a repeat of 2002 in Milwaukee?

The teams head into extra innings with a limited resources in either bullpen. Both teams had just three relievers left, none that could go more than a couple innings. The AL had Scott Kazmir, who Terry Francona would like to avoid - or use for just one inning - former Mariners George Sherrill, who can't go much more than one inning, and Joakim Soria, a short reliever.

The NL has Brandon Webb, but Clint Hurdle would like to avoid using him, Brad Lidge, a one-inning pitcher, and Carlos Marmol, who can't go long. Tim Lincecum is sick and not available. I mentioned Kerry Wood in an earlier thread but he's out with an injury.

Could a position player take the mound, like catcher Jamie Burke did for the Mariners? Both managers may be asking his remaining players if they can pitch, just in case.

TENTH: Mariano Rivera, who was in big trouble with a runner on first and third and one out, gets out of trouble with a 4-6-3 double play. . . . are the NL players kicking this game away? Two infield errors to open the 10th. Runners on first and third with no outs. At this point, It doesn't look like we'll need any more pitchers. The MVP is still uncertain. It may come down to whomever drives in the winning run. Maybe Grady Sizemore. He deserves it. He comes up in the 10th with the bases loaded but bounces into a fielder's choice, with the force at the plate. That was followed by another force at the plate. Amazingly, the inning ended on a tremendous throw by Tejada to just get Justin Morneau at first. Tejada has all the credentials for the MVP, even in defeat.
