It was six years ago in Milwaukee that the game ended in a 7-7 tie, to the eternal embarrassment of Commissioner Bud Selig. That's what led MLB to make this game meaningful, for World Series home-field advantage. But have the managers planned well for it? I'm a little surprised that the broadcasters have not raised the spectre of extra innings and setting up how many pitchers - short or long relievers - are still available for each team.
NINTH: As Mariano Rivera entered the ninth with one on and one out to a tremendous ovation, I couldn't help but think what would happen if he blew the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. How would they react? That's just sheer speculation and folly. Rivera got out of the inning with a strikeout-throwout double play. He's been living large for an entire career. . . .finally with two outs in the ninth, broadcaster Joe Buck gives a brief rundown of remaining pitchers. . . .J.D. Drew had the opportunity to become the unamious MVP choice with two outs in the ninth, but he strikes out. Ryan Dempster strikes out the side in the ninth. It's extra innings: A broadcast and fans delight; a commissioner's nightmare.
