After an impressive NCAA Tournament appearance, things have quickly turned sour for the Binghamton Bearcats. Despite overwhelming criticism that he has completely lowered his school's standards in an effort to field a more competitive team, head coach Kevin Broadus could always point to his team's on-court success to silence his doubters. Now, it seems that his "we'll take anybody as long as they haven't murdered somebody yet" style of recruiting has come back to bite him where it hurts, as senior guard Emanuel Mayben was charged with possession and distribution of cocaine. Mayben has predictably pleaded not guilty to the charges, but that appears to be nothing more than a formality at this point.
Mayben was Binghamton's second leading scorer a year ago, and actually set their single season assist record with 149 in 32 games. The irony here is that while Mayben was dishing to his teammates, he was likely racking up just as many assists off the court. His official bio indicates that he has a one year old son, which makes this situation that much more frustrating for all of those involved.
As far as Broadus is concerned, this situation should serve as a wake-up call, but I doubt it. Over the past few seasons he has morphed Binghamton into a home for players who were kicked out of their previous schools for every problem imaginable. He has sacrificed any sort of moral code for his win-loss record, and off-the-court issues like this will continue to pop up with the current way Broadus operates. Sorry Tony Kornheiser, but this is certainly not a good sign for your beloved Bearcats.
