There has been a lot of teacher picketing going on lately.
Suppose it is expected with all the cuts, budget re-hashing and other uncertainties.
But here is something not normally seen in teacher protests: Teachers picketing the union.
Charter school teachers are demanding that unions stick up for them.
But charter school teachers were amazed to hear the president of NYSUT, Richard Iannuzzi, say the union had sought a freeze in charter school funding during this year’s state budget crisis.
Most charter school teachers are not member of the union, but that is not true for all. The Buffalo News article quotes Christine Twarozek, treasurer of the teachers’ union at the charter school on Kenmore Avenue (NY), by stating that charter school teachers who are members of the NYSUT feel that the union not always has their interest at heart.
“I think because they feel somehow we’re a threat to their funding, we’re not being fully represented to the best NYSUT could do for us,” she said.
