Actress Vanessa Hudgens stated in an interview with Self Magazine earlier this year that her secret to flat abs is pilates. In addition to classical pilates, she also experiments with piloxing, which combines pilates and boxing by adding weights and punch-like exercises for an increased cardio workout.
If you have never heard of piloxing before, it may not be available in your area yet. In Hollywood, however, it seems to be the latest fitness craze for stars like Vanessa Hudgens, Hillary Duff, Ashley Tisdale and Brittany Snow.
It may seem odd to combine a pilates workout that has traditionally been used by dancers with something as violent as boxing. But familiarity does breed contempt and surprising your body with new and extreme exercises should help you get out of a rut and avoid a plateau. While piloxing works your core muscles as much as traditional pilates does, it also helps you get a toned and beautifully shaped biceps without the bulk or boredom you can expect from weightlifting.
Although piloxing is not available in Tampa, Fla. yet, you can get the piloxing workout DVD ($19.95) and one-pound weighted gloves ($24.00) online from the impressive lady who invented this new high-cardio core workout, Viveca Jensen. Jensen is a certified pilates instructor in Toluca Lake, Calif. and has countless celebrities as clients, including Hillary Duff.
