Those darn Zombies just won't leave poor Jane Austen alone.
Aiming to make good on the critical and commercial success of recent release Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, publisher Quirk Books has just announced that they will be releasing a sequel titled Dawn of the Dreadfuls. If you missed it, the first book made a splash by taking the original text from Pride and Prejudice (which is now in the public domain) and mashing it up with Zombie folklore. On the surface this concept seems like a sure fire ticket to the bargain bin, but in the hands of co-author Seth Grahame-Smith it actually turns out to be fairly amusing. As reported by the LA Times, the prequel will apparently tackle the question of just how the land of England came to be infested by the aforementioned dreadfuls.
However, despite the success of the first book, it will be interesting to see what type of response is garnered by the prequel. As exciting as the origianl premise was, the the one drawback was that the book tended to drag a bit as the novelty of the idea began to wear off. In the end there just was not enough Zombie action throughout the story to saciate a die hard fan of the undead. Perhaps this time around, with a new author at the healm (Steve Hockensmith takes over for Grahame-Smith) the story will maintain a sense of originality throughout. If it does, Zombie fans across the globe will be ready and willing to devour it in mass. A website has already been set up to promote the new book, which is due out on March 23rd of this coming year.
