The Fort Worth Stock Show paid off big for one teen from Graham, Texas. This young lady had to go through more than just feeding and exercising her animal. During the time she was raising her prized steer “War Admiral” she started having headaches and tests revealed, what could have been a devastating diagnosis that could have ended her show career. Doctors diagnosed Rikki Buckalew with pseudotumor cerebri disease; this is a rare brain disease, making the brain think it has a tumor. To compensate the brain creates an abnormal amount of spinal fluid.
Doctors were able to get a handle on her disease and she recovered to continue preparing her steer for the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo livestock show. The trip to the show was reward enough but she was rewarded even more when her European crossbred was awarded grand champion, and an even bigger award came Saturday morning at the Sale of Champions when he was bought by Larry White Jr. for a record price of $210,000! War Admiral will live the rest of his long life at the Fort Worth Zoo and the money will enable Rikki to pay off medical bills and pay for her college education. She plans to attend TCU this fall.
