Wake Forest has elected to wear white jerseys for Saturday's game at Georgia Tech. This means Tech will wear either a gold or blue jersey for the 3:30 p.m. matchup. Paul Johnson said the players will choose between the gold and blue jerseys.
According to NCAA rules, the home team must wear "dark" jerseys and the visiting team must wear white jerseys. However, the home team may wear white jerseys if the visiting team agrees to wear its dark jerseys. Wake Forest has denied Tech's request to wear the home whites since 1998, when a white-clad Tech opened up a can of salt-cured whoopin' on the Deacs, 63-35.
Many Tech fans believe that the blue jerseys are cursed, given Tech's terrible performances the last two times the Jackets donned the blue tops (a 9-6 snoozer of a loss to Wake in the 2006 ACC title game and a 38-3 backhand slap from LSU in last year's Chick-fil-A Bowl). Actually, the idea that blue jerseys are unlucky goes back to the days of Bobby Dodd, when Tech would bring out the navy tops for lesser opponents. It was a popular opinion back then that the blue jerseys were generally unlucky and led to losses in big games. However, don't forget that Tech won a national championship in 1990 wearing the much-maligned blue jerseys.
Make no mistake...this is not a gimmicky "blackout" or some misguided motivational tactic.
