Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world. The gardens have been in operation since 1843, except for a brief period when colleagues of the Nazis destroyed areas of the park. The Danish people promptly rebuilt the damaged areas and reopened their landmark. Tivoli now ranks as the third most visited theme park in Europe. In fact, Walt Disney loved Tivoli so much that he tried to duplicate the ambience at Disneyland.
Tivoli is a world of fantasy, with buildings resembling some of the more exotic locales around the world. There is a magnificent recreation of what resembles the Taj Mahal, which is framed in lights at night. (See photo) The gardens are best appreciated at night; it seems every tree, fountain and building are alight. Tivoli is also home to a wonderful pantomime theatre and symphony orchestra.
Among the many amusement park rides is the wooden roller coaster built in Sweden in 1914. I loved the historic value of the coaster; however, it did creak and shift a bit, which only added to the excitement of the ride. There are other more current thrill rides with equally thrilling names such as “the Demon” and “Vertigo”, in addition to the world’s tallest carrousel which is over 260 feet high.
Tivoli Gardens provides a nice diversion when traveling through Northern Europe or Scandinavia. After the fatigue of seeing countless museums, churches, and castles, the gardens provide a welcome evening of fun and stress relief.
