Mount Rushmore with powdered wigs

Winter has touched the Midwest and is leaving a coating of snow, which makes the four presidents on Mount Rushmore look like they have just had their wigs powdered or have a terrible case of dandruff! Just a week ago, the temperatures in the hills were in the mid 50’s and 60’s and now we are lucky if we can top 35, somehow I think we have missed our “Indian summer” and have gone directly to winter.

The snow started yesterday and is still coming down. With high wind warnings and winter weather advisory for most areas of the prairie, it would make the most adventurous visitors think twice before venturing into the Black Hills. However they are missing some of the most beautiful time of the year to visit. The snow muffles most sounds making the experience the most peaceful and serene, a great time to commune with Mother Nature.

The South Dakota highway department and the Mount Rushmore National Memorial staff are experts at keeping the roads clear and making travel in the area safe. Those of us that live in the Black Hills have grown used to their exceptional service so much that we tend to take it all for granted and after all this is the Black Hills and the weather can change on a dime. The temperature is supposed to be in the 60’s again next week so the snow won’t stick around to long and the powdered wings will only be a memory, at least until the next snowfall!
