What better way to start off than the 1998 Daytona 500.In his twentieth attempt, Dale Earnhardt finally won the race that had eluded him throughout his illustrious career. He has already won seven titles, the Southern 500, the Brickyard 400, and the Coca Cola 600.It was the only crown jewel accolade lacking on Earnhardt’s remarkable racing resume.
Earnhardt fans recall the heartbreak that the ‘Man in Black’ endured for nearly two decades, most notably, in 1986, when he ran out of gas while leading with less than three laps remaining; or in 1990, when he cut a tire while leading on the final lap; or in 1993, when Dale Jarrett edged him out by inches at the finish line; or in 1997, when an accident triggered by an aggressive move by Jeff Gordon sent Earnhardt and others into a multi-car pileup.Yes, the disappointments were abundant for the seven-time champion.
However, on February 15, 1998, Earnhardt and his Richard Childress Racing team finally won the Daytona 500.
